Packing for Camp

These lists have been designed by the staff to ensure that your daughter is safe and comfortable during her camp stay. Please send everything on the list. We suggest that you include a printed copy or written list in your daughter’s suitcase with the number of each item packed. This will make packing easier, and ensure that your daughter returns home with all of her belongings!!

Please review the section below for suggestions and explanations for requiring certain items, and make sure that your daughter arrives with everything necessary.

This continues to be important this summer, as we do not want campers sharing personal items in an effort to ensure health and safety.

The What, Why, and How to Packing for Camp

  • All the following items are unpacked immediately upon arrival. It is easier to have access to them if they are packed in a large duffel or large trash bag. The duffel can be stored until packing to go home. If you use a trash bag, we will replace it when packing to go home.

    • Blankets

    • Mattress pad

    • 1 set of sheets

    • Pillow

    • Stuffed animal

    • 1 Laundry bag

    • 1 set of towels

    • 1 Beach towel

    • 2 Bathing suits

    • Bathing caps

    • Jacket/Fleece

    • Boots

    • Raincoat with hood/poncho

    • Shoes

The shower caddy can be carried separately. Toothbrush, toothpaste, cup and face wash can be brought in the shower caddy, but those items have a home on the shelf above the sinks.

  • For a three or six week stay a trunk or footlocker is convenient. For a shorter stay a suitcase is large enough. Duffel bags can be used for extra sheets and towels. As a storage for clothes a large duffel bag is difficult to keep organized and the girls cannot find what they are looking for easily.

An ideal size for a trunk is 32”L x 18”W x 16”D or smaller. Keep the suitcase to a medium or large size, not extra large.

  • Send the shelf box packed with her personal things. A shelf box could contain:

    • Cards, other activities for Rest Hour and Bung Time

    • String for friendship bracelets

    • Books

    • Writing materials

    • Flashlight with extra batteries

    • Scissors

    • Craft supplies

    • Hair brush/comb

    • Hair accessories

    • Orange and Gray nail polish

  • There is a shelf above the sinks in each bathroom for a camper’s cup, toothbrush, toothpaste, pump soap or bar soap in a soap container, and face wash. Shower items should be brought in a shower caddy that will drain. It should hold shampoo, conditioner, shower gel or body wash, razor, and shaving cream. It must drain from the bottom. If it has mesh sides it must be able to stand upright and drain from the bottom. Smaller is better!

  • There is hanging space for her dress/dressy outfit. Send it on a hanger. Camp "fancy" outfits are worn during specific activities, such as Team Show.

  • Navy shorts and white shirts are the camp outfit. Everyone wears this about 5-6 times in a three week session. Any white shirt with a Nyoda logo, any Nyoda sweatshirt, or a plain white shirt is acceptable. Navy shorts, navy leggings, or a navy skirt is acceptable. Girls should not wear denim shorts, cutoffs, or jeans. Navy gym shorts or navy shorts with stripes or a pattern are not considered part of the Blue and White outfit.

  • These are totally optional. The girls like to dress up in team colors (orange and gray) for team games and other team events. Please make sure these fun things are labeled. The girls do not know their team until they arrive, so either color is fine.

    Orange and Gray clothing/accessories:

    • Socks

    • Hat

    • Tutu

    • Scarf or boa

    • T-Shirt

    • Tights or leggings

    • Shorts

    • Hair accessories

    • Face paint

    • Silver/gray or orange lipstick

  • These are totally optional. Label whenever possible!

    • White shorts/skirt/pants/jeans if she wants to be in the Christmas Choir

    • Christmas hat

    • Hair band

    • T-shirt

    • P.J.s.

    • Inexpensive Christmas jewelry

    • Green and red clothes

  • Everyday Footwear: Sneakers, tennis shoes, or tie shoes. Crocs and sandals are acceptable if there is a strap across the back. Backless sandals are not safe for walking around camp. Flip flops are worn to the swimming dock and to the showers only.

Boots: Rain boots are essential at Nyoda. They must be water and mud proof. Ugg boots are not acceptable as rain boots. Crocs may not be worn in place of rain boots. Waterproof winter/snow boots are not recommended as they become hot and uncomfortable when worn for several hours.

Hiking: Comfortable standard hiking boots or a hiking-type tennis shoe is adequate.

Riding: All campers planning to take horseback riding lessons need a heeled boot except those girls in the Junior Bungalow, grades 2&3, who will have an introductory lesson only. No boots will be required.

  • Every bungalow sleeps out in a tent once during each session. An outdoor sleeping bag is needed for this overnight experience. Please label both the bag and the cover. Please note that girls staying one or two weeks may not be in camp the night of their scheduled overnight.

  • It sounds like a lot, but every camper needs 4 blankets! She will make her bed with three; A nice top blanket is a twin bed quilt or any other soft blanket as campers sit on their beds during rest hour. The fourth blanket is folded over the pillow to use as a cover during rest hour or as a blanket when the nights are very warm and your daughter does not want to get into the sheets. It works just fine to bring a double bed sized blanket and fold it in half. This would count as two blankets. Do not use a sleeping bag as a blanket.

  • White or bright colored bathing caps are required when swimming in the lake, either for lessons or for free swim. The cloth bathing camps are very acceptable for these times. However, on the occasion that we swim in the evening, the girls need one bathing cap that is waterproof, especially those with long hair. There are no hairdryers available and the girls do not enjoy sleeping on a wet pillow. This is one item that is frequently misplaced, so make sure it is labeled.

  • A mess kit is a set of pans and bowls that can be used to cook over an open fire. Do not send plastic pieces or plastic silverware. Every part of the kit must be metal except the drinking cup. Most often the silverware is sold separately from the cooking pans. A mess kit should contain a fry pan, a dish, and a bowl with a lid. It is helpful if it has a bag or cover.

Label each piece separately, including the silverware.

  • A  three week camper should bring a wallet with about $5 in singles, a six week camper should have about $10. Girls that are in senior camp (grades 8, 9,10) should bring about $15-$20 since there are opportunities for out of camp trips. There is no camp store for personal purchases.

    More Information:

Nyoda has two teams and $1 is collected from every camper to help with the Team Show and Party. Each Sunday $1.00 is collected at Chapel. Nyoda is a member of the Plan International and was a charter member when it was previously known as the Foster Parents Plan. Each year, Nyoda sponsors a village where the money is put toward wells for clean water, schools and school supplies, farming tools, and other items that can make a village self-sufficient. For several years our village has been in the Philippines, but that can change with the needs of the plan.

  • For the safety of every camper, all first aid supplies and medicines of any kind are the responsibility of the nurse. Campers are not permitted to have such supplies in their personal belongings. Please give the nurse everything involving medical or first aid needs when you meet with her. If your daughter needs something that she is used to taking care of herself at home, like a bandaid or an aspirin, our nurse is happy to make sure she has what she needs.
